13 COVERS: The Rampaging HULK of DOUG MOENCH

A birthday salute, featuring the art of Earl Norem, Bob Larkin, Joe Jusko, Jim Starlin and MORE…

Doug Moench was born 74 years ago on Feb. 23, 1948, and is one of the most respected writers of the Bronze Age. Moench’s list of credits is extensive but for this year’s 13 COVERS birthday salute, we’re going with a selection from his time writing Marvel’s late-’70s black-and-white mag The Rampaging Hulk (later changed to simply Hulk — or The Hulk!, if you prefer — when the interiors went to color).

  1. Whoa. Starlin gave Hulk fangs in that one cover.

  2. Rampaging Hulk was awesome, if short lived. Has it been collected as a paperback or book?

  3. Happy birthday to Mr. Moench. I find myself liking the Earl Norem covers, primarily because I’m familiar with Norem’s “Masters of the Universe” artwork.

  4. I have a copy of issue 14, one of the Bob Larkin covers above. An interesting story with a villain never used before or again.

This was such an interesting series! Like the comic but different at the same time. I’d love to have the whole set!

An entire article devoted to the creation and end of the series would be very interesting to read!

  5. My local bookstore struggled to have many copies or at all on hand. My collection of those B/W Marvel mags have a lot of holes. They were a fun read. Loved the cover art.
