A BIRTHDAY SALUTE to the fan-favorite artist, who turns 69…
Like most American comics readers, I only became aware of British artist Alan Davis when he joined Batman and the Outsiders in the 1980s. What I didn’t know was that he was already establishing himself with Marvel UK on what became his signature character, Captain Britain.
(I actually picked up a copy of the 1985 series Captain Britain #1 while in London a couple years back, along with a stack of other Marvel UK titles going back to the ’70s. I love “foreign” comics.)
Anyway, over the last 40 years, Davis — born 69 years ago, on June 18, 1956 — has become one of the industry’s most respected artists and a fan favorite. So it seemed fitting for this year’s 13 COVERS birthday tribute to cross the pond to Londinium and bring you a Captain Britain gallery. (That series had 14 issues, so you get a bonus!)
Cheers!

I had most of these back in the day. I now have the omnibus which covers all of Alan’s run with the hood Captain. Shame he’s not really being used much anymore and when he is it seems that people don’t get him. Ah well. A happy birthday to Mr. Davis.

Boy, I loved these issues, you’ll even find me in a few of the lettercols.
And I have the same birthday as Alan, to whom I wish a very Happy Birthday. OK, it’s just gone midnight on the 19th as I write, but the thought is there.

I remember buying this whole series while it was coming out. Those covers are awesome. Loved it then and love it now. I still have my copies.
Happy birthday Mr Davis !
