13 COVERS: Dig These Tributes to DETECTIVE COMICS #27

Featuring Marshall Rogers, Norm Breyfogle, Greg Capullo and MORE…

A few weeks back, we ran a really fun piece by Jim Beard that featured 13 homages to the classic 1966 Batman and Robin rooftop pin-up. You folks really seemed to dig it, so I was inspired to do another volume — only this time with Detective Comics #27, Batman’s first appearance.

Bob Kane

Why that issue? Well, it really requires no explanation but it just so happens that a swell copy of Detective Comics #27 is up for sale at Heritage Auctions now — and you can get all the groovy details here. (There are other hugely important comics in the auction, too.) Oh, and Detective #27 came out this month in 1939.

So, dig these 13 COVERS (or, really, 12 covers and one groovy sketch by the great Fred Hembeck.)

Right on.

  1. One could argue Amazing Fantasy #15 is also an unconscious tribute to Detective #27.
