A tribute to the little comics company that could…
TwoMorrows’ next illustrated history book is The Charlton Companion by Jon B. Cooke, an exhaustively researched look at the small comics company that punched above its weight and whose legacy has endured to this day.
Charlton’s 1960s Action Heroes line has captured the most attention over the decades, giving us, among others, the Ted Kord Blue Beetle, Captain Atom and the Question (and, by extension, Watchmen).
With that in mind, dig these 13 COVERS by artists like Steve Ditko, Pat Boyette and Pete Morisi and make sure you grab yourself a copy of The Charlton Companion, which is due out Nov. 9.

The Charlton Companion is due Nov. 9. The 272-page, full-color trade paperback lists for $43.95 and will be at comics shops and booksellers. You can also order it directly through TwoMorrows. Click here.

Would love a copy of all those Ditko’s issues. I have a few of the Blue Beetle ones in the old collection somewhere.

YAY the Book has a Staton Cover, reminiscent of First Comics

I assume you do realize that Staton’s E-Man started at Charlton, over a decade before his First Comics incarnation.

Someone needs to put these comics out in trade paperback (or multiple trades). This is classic stuff!

DC did an archive volume (Action Heroes Vol 2) that contains all of the Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, Question, etc. content. You can still find it out there in the wild.

Were those Charlton issues reprinted under the name Modern Comics in the 70s? I seem to remember seeing them, possibly bagged like Whitman did, as a kid.

Some were– not all. Selection seems to have been random.

Feel like I got short changed on the Sweet Morisi. Could be he’s overdue for thirteen splash panels.

Wow! Love it! I’m getting the book (hope there are interviews!) and I love that E-Man and Nova are prominent on the books cover! Hey! How about a covers feature on Charlton’s E-Man? (I don’t think there were thirteen, but still…)
