One of the great Bronze Age painters was born 98 years ago…
The late, great Earl Norem — born 98 years ago on April 17, 1923 — was one of the most popular fantasy painters of the ’70s and ’80s (with a career that actually stretched back to postwar America).
Marvel fans regard him particularly fondly given his cover stints on such magazine titles as Savage Sword of Conan and Planet of the Apes, as well as various paperbacks.

Happy birthday to the late Mr. Norem. I’m the most fond of his artwork for the “Masters of the Universe” franchise.

Earl Norem painted my childhood. My introduction to his painted artwork was that Avengers paperback reprinting the introduction of the Vision. I remember my grandmother getting it for me at the local pharmacy when I was a kid. I was in awe of Earl’s talent from that day onward.
He was the greatest there ever was.

Norem’s work was seminal to me, but I knew it best from the Masters of the Universe work he did (particularly in the MOTU magazine) and a couple of fully-painted Marvel Storybooks he did, one featuring Spider-Man, the other the Fantastic Four. Years later I discovered he painted a lot of covers of “Real West” magazine my Dad subscribed to, published by Charlton!
