13 COVERS: An ALEX SCHOMBURG Birthday Celebration

The Golden Age stalwart was born 118 years ago…

By PETER BOSCH

The late Alex Schomburg, who was born 118 years ago on May 10, 1905, was one of the greatest comic book artists during the Golden Age, known especially for his cover work at Timely (now Marvel).

Two previous 13th Dimension birthday salutes to him included looks at his covers featuring the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner. This year, we’re going all out: Here are 13 amazing covers by Alex Schomburg for All-Winners Comics that feature the Human Torch, Sub-Mariner AND Captain America (plus Toro and Bucky!).

(NOTE From Dan: The covers are World War II-era and some of them feature propagandist, racial depictions that are ugly and from a less enlightened time. We are running them in the context of that period.)

  2. Great collection of images! However, I am pretty sure he reused the same Captain America head and expression in almost all of these! Haha
