13 COVERS: A ROY THOMAS Birthday Celebration

One of comics’ biggest names turns 77.

Roy Thomas, born Nov. 22, 1940, made substantial contributions to both Marvel and DC and continues to illuminate the world of comics as the editor of Alter Ego, the magazine that he first became associated with back in the ’60s.

That’s the nickel version of the story. All told, he’s been a pillar of the comics industry for more than 50 years.

There are a bunch of ways we could slice up this year’s 13 COVERS birthday salute but I’ve chosen the X-Men because it’s a run I’ve not highlighted much here at 13th Dimension. Thomas had two stints with the mutants in the ’60s, working with artists such as Neal Adams, Tom Palmer, Werner Roth, Dick Ayers and Ross Andru.

So here we go:

Werner Roth pencils, Dick Ayers inks

Neal Adams pencils. Poss. Tom Palmer inks.

John Buscema pencils. Poss. John Tartaglione inks.

Roth pencils, Tartaglione inks.

Barry Windsor-Smith pencils. Vince Colletta inks.

Adams, with John Romita alterations

Ross Andru pencils and George Roussos inks.

Adams pencils, Palmer inks

Roth pencils, Ayers inks

Adams pencils. Poss. Palmer inks.

Sal Buscema pencils and Palmer inks.

Adams pencils. Poss. Palmer inks.

Marie Severin pencils. Sam Grainger inks.
