13 COVERS: A PAUL GULACY Birthday Celebration

Actually, it’s 13 COVERS AND SPLASH PAGES — starring Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu!

I think it’s a pretty safe bet that artist Paul Gulacy’s best-known series was his pairing with Doug Moench on Marvel’s Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu in the ’70s — a run that I’m diving into myself right now.

Anyway, it’s Gulacy’s 66th birthday — he was born Aug. 15, 1953 — so it’s time for a 13 COVERS salute. Thing is, he only did a handful of covers for the series, which is pretty amazing, all things considered.

What to do? Well, in the past, I’ve highlighted some of his covers for the six-issue series he and Moench did 15-20 years ago. But I really wanted to focus on the Bronze Age run.

Good thing Gulacy turned in some absolutely sizzling splash pages — one of the series’ hallmarks.

So dig these movie-posteresque 13 COVERS AND SPLASH PAGES.

I certainly do.

  2. I distinctly remember having most if not all of those issues in that series. I was a BIG Bruce Lee fan during the height of his movie career and also watched the Kung Fu TV show with David Carradine every week. I even practiced learning the quiet walking technique Kwai Chang Caine did on rice paper.
As a teen I was shorter than most guys and was picked on some, until I started to MIMIC the moves by Bruce Lee and Carradine.

I dropped a big billy to his knees using a distraction technique I saw on Kung Fu and a properly placed kick between his legs. I also practiced my sparing with a good friend who actually knew martial arts and has a dojo today. I never really learned or took lessons in any martial art form, but was so good at faking it that I rarely got picked on in high school after my introduction to the Lee movies and the Kung Fu show.
