13 COVERS: A NICK CARDY Birthday Celebration

A tribute to the late Nick Cardy — who was born 101 years ago…

I just started a brand-new reading project: all the original Teen Titans stories through the short-lived ’70s revival and all The Brave and the Bold Batman team-ups.

This means a ton of writer Bob Haney and a lot of Nick Cardy, an artist who ranks among my very favorites. Which is every kind of groovy.

As it happens, Cardy was born 101 years ago on Oct. 20, 1920, so it’s time for a 13 COVERS birthday salute. I thought about a few different ways to go at this, especially since I’ve run a number of Cardy galleries over the years, but given my new mini-quest, I’ve opted to go all-Titans — but only covers I believe I’ve never featured before.

So dig these 13 COVERS by one of comics’ all-time greats:

  2. I had no idea who Nick Cardy was until a year ago. I knew his work from old comics that had his covers in the ads. If I had been old enough to buy them on the stands I am certain that I would have bought them on the strength of the covers alone. I definitely remember the Wondergirl as a witch cover for instance. What a great artist!

  3. Nick Cardy was the best! I read that Nick Cardy’s designs were used to create Filmation’s Aquaman and Aqualad animated designs. Aquaman and Mera’s costumes were modified for animation, but Aquaman’s face is clearly based on Cardy’s version. I owned the TT comic that featured Wonder Girl as a witch. It’s a great cover.
