13 COVERS: A Neal Adams ACTION COMICS Bronze Age Celebration

Perhaps best known for his work on Batman, GL/GA and Deadman, Neal Adams also made his mark in the Bronze Age on the Man of Steel.

Action Comics #1 — the most important comic book of all time — was published April 18, 1938. Probably. There seems to be some debate, so if you know for sure, let us know.

Anyway, it’s what I’m going with, so we’re going to celebrate the comic book that gave us Siegel and Shuster’s Superman with four sets of 13 COVERS: Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age and Modern Age. Because if there’s a specific comic-book title that deserves this over-the-top treatment, it’s this one.

Now, here is where we get into some overlap. Even though he began his comics career with a huge splash in the Silver Age, I always think of Neal Adams as a Bronze Age artist first. I think it’s because his Green Lantern/Green Arrow with Denny O’Neil ushered in the Bronze Age on the DC side of things, and his Batman work is the pinnacle of that period as well.

But when it comes to his Action Comics cover work, a lot of his best material was actually in the Silver Age. (Just as Curt Swan, whom we focused on in our Silver Age roundup, had plenty of Bronze Age covers to his credit.)

Let’s just break the rules then: Adams needs to be recognized for his Action Comics covers but he straddles the eras so we’re just gonna go with 13 COVERS that combine the two.  (The demarcation line is kinda blurry anyway.)

This is not a definitive list. It’s not a ranking. It’s what I like. So if you see one of your favorites missing, add it to the comments below or in whichever social-media thread you found this!
