13 COVERS: A KURT SCHAFFENBERGER Birthday Celebration

The late artist was born 102 years ago…

By PETER BOSCH

While Curt Swan was the greatest Superman artist in the Silver Age, the late Kurt Schaffenberger was equally the same for Lois Lane (and, I might add, for Lana Lang). Schaffenberger was born 102 years ago on Dec. 15, 1920, but I would love it if he had a birthday every month so we could show more of his great artwork.

Here are 13 COVERS — gems all — in chronological order:

Not an imaginary story!  Who is this mysterious woman? One hint – her initials are L.L. (and, no, not Lana Lang or Lori Lemaris). Admittedly, I am cheating a little here. She had one more initial. If you still need another clue, consult my birthday column today for Al Plastino.)

The first Silver Age appearance of Catwoman!

  1. I remember seeing the cover for LL 60 at a convenience store in Georgia when I was 7 years old–we were heading down to visit relatives in Florida at the time, and I wanted to know how the story would turn out, however my parents wouldn’t buy it for me. It took me years to be able to read that story!

  2. What fun! Would love to have all of these in a Schaffenberger collected edition.

Why can’t today’s comics be fun like this?

  3. Seeing all of this makes me really want a collection of Mr. and Mrs. Superman stories from the late 70s/early 80s, which were mostly drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger in the Superman Family title. Perfect tie-in to the Superm and Lois series!
