13 COVERS: A KEITH GIFFEN Birthday Celebration

Long live Giffen’s Legion!

Given the state of things right now, it’s hard to remember just how big a deal The Legion of Super-Heroes was in the 1980s: A-List all the way, the kind of book readers would chew over at the comics shop in those pre-internet days. One of the major reasons? Keith Giffen, who turns 65 today.

Giffen, born Nov. 30, 1952, is one of the most prolific comics creators of the last three or four decades — and one of the Legion’s most prominent architects, long associated with the 30th century’s preeminent super-team as plotter and penciller. He and Paul Levitz, of course, conceived the team’s defining story, The Great Darkness Saga.

For this 13 COVERS birthday salute, we focus on those original, early ’80s issues.

Enjoy.

  1. Such great work. I do think #289 would be a lot better if the title weren’t so blooming big, filling the space space, softening the starkness of the image. And I still assume that’s Green Arrow being held by Dirk on #296…
