13 COVERS: A JOHN BYRNE Birthday Celebration

The comics master was born 72 years ago on July 6, 1950…

I’ve published a ton about John Byrne over the years but in preparation for this birthday post I realized that, unless I’m missing something, it’s been about six years since I’ve done a gallery from the artist’s X-Men years in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

Six years! Kind of amazing, no?

Anyway, dig these 13 beauts — all but one inked by the fab Terry Austin.

Right on.

Inked by Bob Layton

  1. Happy birthday to a true comics legend. I couldn’t get enough of reading his “Superman” run when I could.

  2. I know that his X-Men run gets all the accolades, but his Superman run was transformative (I was 13 when he revamped the character, I still remember how thrilling it was to read those issues as they were being released in real time), and it’s the work that I think of when I think of Byrne.
