13 COVERS: A JOHN BUSCEMA Birthday Celebration

The late, great artist was born 97 years ago, on Dec. 11, 1927…

Hard to believe, but we haven’t run a 13 COVERS birthday salute to Big John Buscema in three years. Three years!

Sure, we’ve done other tributes, but not our tried-and-trusty signature feature.

So let’s fix that right now with 13 COVERS that soar the spaceways!

(By the way, also check out Joe Jusko’s appreciation of Buscema. You’ll dig it.)

Far out!

  1. Issue number 6 was one of the scariest comics I ever read

  2. The cover of Silver Surfer no. 4 is as iconic as Avengers no. 4. Two great artists flexing their muscles.

  3. I’m still a huge fan of Big John. I owned How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way in hardcover and wore that sucker out in the late 70s.

  4. I had the complete Surfer run when I was a kid but it went missing with the bulk of my childhood collection sometime in the 70’s. I was very fortunate to have been able to repurchase all 18 issues from a dealer at a con back around 2010 for less than you can buy issues 1, 3 or 4 for now.

  5. I’ve always loved that Silver Surfer/Thor cover for issue four. As powerful as the Silver Surfer is, it looks like Thor is about to send him flying to the other side of the universe.

  6. Issue 3 has always been my favorite and issue 1.
