13 COVERS: A JOE SIMON Birthday Celebration

Comics are kids’ stuff, right?

Joe Simon and Jack Kirby certainly thought so — as did pretty much everyone back in the Golden Age. Once DC introduced Robin, the floodgates opened for kid heroes, and they didn’t even have to wear masks.

So when they moved to DC from what later became Marvel, Simon and Kirby jumped all over this idea and created the Newsboy Legion and the Boy Commandos.

Joe Simon was born Oct. 11, 1913 — 103 years ago. (He died in 2011.) While the greatest Simon-Kirby creation is now a star-spangled movie hero, we’re shining a spotlight this year on their kid teams of yore.

All of these covers are penciled by Kirby and inked by Simon. Your fave not here? Just add it in the comments below or in whichever social-media thread you found this.
