13 COVERS: A JIM APARO Birthday Celebration

The Brave, the Bold, the Aparo.

LettercolBatman03

For some Jim Aparo was Aquaman. For others, he was Batman solo. For still others, he was the Spectre.

For me, he will always be The Brave and the Bold, first and foremost.

Aparo was born Aug. 24, 1932, meaning he would have been 84. (He died in 2005.)

Here are 13 COVERS celebrating some of his best B&B work. And if you don’t see your fave, add it in the comments below or in whichever social-media thread you found this …

  1. I was late to the party really coming to appreciate Jim Aparo, and I must admit I wasn’t really a DC fan, but if there was one thing that could draw me over it was Jim Spatial art. I remember that Batman/Sergeant Rock. I was really fascinated by that cover as a kid.

I’d heard rumors that Aparo almost did a Spider-Man book once. Now that would have been something to see.

  3. His was the 1st Batman I ever saw as a kid. Never seen Neal Adams until I was an adult. Aparo does him better. His action scenes loom like he’s in motion.

  4. I’d forgotten how great the cover to #166 is. Thanks for the reminder!

  5. I have to wonder if Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez’s inks would’ve matched the late Mr. Aparo’s pencils on any DC project.
