Phantom Lady — and MORE…
Matt Baker is one of the greatest artists of the Golden Age and, for no good reason, we’ve hardly ever featured him at the site. Compared to the Silver and Bronze Ages, we don’t publish nearly as much about the Golden Age, especially the smaller companies.
Those are reasons but, like I say, they’re not good ones, particularly when someone like Matt Baker is the subject.
The late Baker was born 103 years ago, on Dec. 10, 1921, and he has the well-earned reputations as one of the great Good Girl artists in comics history — best known for his work on Fox’s Phantom Lady, whose cover for Issue #17 sent Fredric Wertham into a lather. But he also worked on plenty of other series, particularly romance comics. He died of a heart attack in 1959, at the painfully young age of 37.
So here is a 13 COVERS salute, including all nine of his fantastic PL covers, along with four other favorites.
Righteous.
