13 COVERS: A DAVE GIBBONS Birthday Celebration

Paging the Doctor…

It’s funny to think that Dave Gibbons, one of comics’ biggest names, has done relatively little work for Marvel over the years.

It’s also funny to think that I’ve barely ever mentioned Doctor Who at 13th Dimension.

The first part I can’t really explain. The second part is simply because I’ve never really watched the show. (Don’t yell at me. We all have our gaps.)

Why bring this up? Because Gibbons — who was born April 14, 1949 — is turning 71 and I wanted to do something a little offbeat for our 13 COVERS birthday tribute.

So dig these 13 COVERS by Gibbons from Marvel’s 1980s Doctor Who series — which reprinted the artist’s (and others’) work for Marvel UK.

  1. I was in high school. One afternoon, after school I was channel surfing. I came across Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor being chased by Daleks. I had no idea what was going on, and it looked kinda cheesy, so I kept surfing. 2000-something, my wife says to me, there’s this show on Netflix you might, like, Doctor Who, with Christopher Eccleston. I checked out “Rose” and was hooked. Now I wish I had a TARDIS to tell myself to give Baker a chance!
