13 COVERS: A Daring GENE COLAN Birthday Salute

The master of mood was born Sept. 1, 1926.

Gene Colan. One of the greats. I could have done our 13 COVERS salute with any number of titles or characters he worked on, like Namor or Dracula, but with Daredevil so popular right now, it only made sense to shine a light on one of the most important artists in the Man Without Fear‘s history.

Colan died in 2011 but his art lives on.

(Standard caveat applies: This is a subjective list and not meant to be definitive. This is not a ranking. This is pretty much what I dig and you may feel very differently. So, rather than moan about a cover you don’t see, instead join in the fun and share your own choices in the comments section or in whatever social-media thread you saw this.)

  1. I have always been amused by issues #29 with him wearing his glasses on under the mask.

    • I always got a kick out of that cover, too.

I have fond memories of collecting Colan’s early DD issues as a kid. The stories weren’t all classics (Mike Murdock?) but the artwork was great. I also loved Romita’s issues 12-19.

  2. These are all great covers, but my favorite is DD 31, Bind Man’s Bluff

  3. Can’t believe that Gene thought that “AssPain” on #47 would go unnoticed. Did we ever research the “Dondi” or “Bondi” and “El Chapo” as well? Of course we did! We were comic book fans who leave no stone unturned…
    What did we find out?
