One last burst of Darwyn Cooke greatness.
—
I don’t think I have much left to say about Darwyn Cooke that hasn’t been said over the last few days by so many people. But in putting together various tributes, I kept coming across more and more illustrations that stopped me in my tracks. No surprise, right? We’d already done a 13 COVERS salute (click here) and a number of terrific comics creators, like Doc Shaner, Jonathan Case, Kevin Nowlan and Kelley Jones weighed in with their favorite images (click here). But I still kept stockpiling more as I scanned the web. A page here, a con sketch there.
So to put a coda on our coverage, here are 13 Great Darwyn Cooke Illustrations. I intentionally avoided completed covers because I wanted to do something a little different.
Greg Capullo, fresh off his brilliant run on Batman, had this to say about Cooke, and this seemed like the right place to share:
“For me, it was more about his work overall — work that belied his gruff exterior. His playful, retro-yet-modern style exuded pure joy — something rarely seen in comics these days.”
Enjoy.
