A 75th BIRTHDAY SALUTE to the late artist, born Jan. 22, 1950…
It’s the late Marshall Rogers’ birthday. He was born 75 years ago, on Jan. 22, 1950. He’s one of the greatest Batman artists ever and a personal favorite of mine, pretty much behind only Neal Adams.
Now, what I really wanted to do here was show off something from inside Marshall Rogers: Brightest Days & Darkest Knights, the first definitive biography of the Bronze Age great, coming from TwoMorrows later in 2025. (I have a major contribution to it, which you can read about here.)
Alas, the book, by Jeff Messer and Dewey Cassell, isn’t quite ready for its close-up, other than the great Michael Kronenberg-designed cover, colored by Glenn Whitmore…
… so I’ve decided to instead bring you a great piece of art that I found on Heritage Auctions’ website:
The piece sold in June 2023 for $4,080, including buyer’s premium. Here’s the official description:
Marshall Rogers – Batman and Robin Illustration Original Art (2001). One of the most revered periods of Batman’s vast publishing history is the Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers period of the 1970s that solidly placed Batman back into the shadows as a creature of the night. Here, Robin joins the scene to complete a great Dynamic Duo. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an edge-to-edge image area of 17″ x 11″. Signed and in Excellent condition.
And if you want some non-Batman Rogers art, check out Peter Bosch’s salute starring Dr. Strange.
Right on.
