The TOP 13 ‘PULLING BACK THE COVER’ Covers

MORRISON MONDAYS!

By BILL MORRISON

Two weeks ago, here at MORRISON MONDAYS, I showed my Simpsons tribute to two Golden-Age Batman covers in which the Caped Crusaders are breaking the fourth wall by pulling back the very cover they’re standing on to reveal something inside the book. I knew there had to be more covers that used this gimmick, so I put out the call to 13th Dimension readers to help me find them.

Well, thanks to the bloodhounds here at the site, along with a little sleuthing of my own, I’ve come up with what I’ll awkwardly call the 13 greatest “pulling back the cover” covers! Here they are, in no particular order:

Jerry Robinson

Jack Burnley pencils, Charles Paris inks

Marc Swayze

Poss. Tony Tallarico

Al Fago — 1945

Al Fago — eight years later

Al Fago — about six months after that

Fred Hembeck pencils, Joe Abelo inks (with Al Milgrom on the lower right corner)

Hank Porter

Dan Gormley

Unknown

Wayne Boring pencils, Stan Kaye inks

Eisner winner BILL MORRISON has been working in comics and publishing since 1993 when he co-founded Bongo Entertainment with Matt Groening, Cindy Vance and Steve Vance. At Bongo, and later as Executive Editor of Mad Magazine, he parodied the comics images he loved as a kid every chance he got. Not much has changed.

Bill is on Instagram (@atomicbattery) and Facebook (Bill Morrison/Atomic Battery Studios), and regularly takes commissions and sells published art through 4C Comics.

  1. Yeah, yeah, Morrison; but can ya do “pulling back the CURTAIN” covers? Huh? What about “presenting a hoop with a character breaking through it” covers?
