A fantastic illustration — and it could be yours!
I like to check in on what’s going on in the world of Marshall Rogers art — and we’ve got a doozy this time around: His 1986 splash page from Secret Origins #6, inked by Terry Austin, is going up for sale at Heritage Auctions.

Here’s a published version…
… and here’s the official description:
Marshall Rogers and Terry Austin Secret Origins #6 Batman Title Splash Page 1 Original Art (DC, 1986). An impressive full-body depiction of a Golden Age-inspired Batman takes center stage in this opening splash, setting the tone for the Dark Knight’s iconic origin to be retold for a new generation of fans. The piece is rendered in ink and crayon over graphite and blue pencil on Bristol board, with an image area of 10.5″ x 12.5″ (including text). It features a paste-up header, credits, stat logo, and indicia. There are residue stains, extensive editorial notes, discolored tape, blue pencil marks, an irregularly clipped top edge, whiteout, and handling wear. In Very Good condition.
The page will be available through Heritage’s Jan. 9-12, 2025, Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction but online bidding is scheduled to begin this month.
You may recall we featured this page in the past and pointed out that it sold in October 2021 for $16,250, including buyer’s premium. No estimate is listed for this sale.
By the way, I’ve got some big Rogers news coming soon, so keep on checking back at 13th Dimension now, y’hear?

I was too young to have read the Englehart-Rogers run when it first appeared, so I have no nostalgic affection for that version of the character. That said, I loved the way Rogers drew the cowl in the 1980s (this story, plus the 1989 newspaper strip). Through a few graphic tricks using high contrast light and shadow, he was able to give the mask dimensionality (particularly the ears) in a way that others haven’t.

I was friends with Marshall when we both lived in the Baltimore-Washington area. I was with him at a comic convention in Maryland when he first sold this splash page in 1990. I’ve been a Rogers fan since I first saw his Batman in DETECTIVE COMICS when I was a teenager. I’m currently designing the TwoMorrows book about him.

I’m really looking forward to this coming out. That said, I’m so behind my TwoMorrows’ stack of reading as it is now.

The best thing about this Marshall Rogers/Terry Austin splash page is Bill Finger getting credited alongside Bob Kane.
