SEASON’S READINGS: Why Comics Are So Special This Time of Year

FRANCO’s FREE-FOR-ALL FRIDAYS…

By FRANCO

As the holidays approach, I’m always reminded of the season and how hectic and harried it can be. One of the things I think about is the people in my life and what you should get them. If you’re the gift-giving kind, I’m sure you have the same thoughts about what to give who.

But I also think about what you should do for yourself, so that when you find a few minutes, you can settle back and reclaim some time to do what you love to do.

By now I’m sure you’ve guessed it — I’m going to suggest comics! It’s an easy choice and think about how easily accessible and cool they are. And the stories are endless!

If you think about the stories themselves, think about the portal you have access to. You can go back and forth through time, space, even dimensions. And comics can do this more cheaply than a TV show or movie can!

You can find all of these things crammed into a space the size of a comic-book store. (Yeah, I know you can get them online but there’s something special about a brick-and-mortar place you can walk into and get lost in the worlds. Not to mention the tactile feel of a book in your hands — always the best feeling!) Every kind of story you can imagine is there for you to discover.

One of the best things I’ve found when you walk into any comic-book shop is to ask what stories or books they would recommend. (This even works for bookstores — and oh my gosh, LIBRARIES!!!! Librarians are the best with this!) The best shops will ask what YOU are interested in. What you might have read before and liked/disliked and be able to suggest something right up your alley.

Heck, I’m part owner and I still do this in my shop, Aw Yeah Comics in Harrison, N.Y. In talking with Marc Hammond (our retail guru and partner) I’ve come away with some pretty amazing reads over the years. Anything that’s new and cool but also those things you might not have even heard about.

This season is a great time to pick something up for a niece or nephew who might like comics or that brother-in-law who once noticed you read comics and showed some interest in it. Superheroes are cool, and I’m one of the biggest hero guys around, but there is so much more. There’s magical and whimsical stuff out there. (Read my friend Katie Cook’s Nothing Special!)

There’s books about killers and lovers and dragons and robots and everything in between.

Pick something up for someone as a stocking stuffer or something for yourself for after all the holiday blitz has passed. You’ll be happy with you if you got yourself something.

Happy shopping! I have to go read Do a Powerbomb! now.

  1. What’s a “as a sticking stuffer”? Anyhoo, the DC title “Silent Knight”….the comic Superman is reading is actually in my collection. Merry Christmas, Franco to you and your family. I hope you find much of that down time.

  2. Nice “Giffy” Filmation clip of Barbara Gordon there from its first iteration of Batman: The Adventures of Batman (1968–as followed in 1977 with The New Adventures of Batman, with the West and Ward voice work).

I’d have more to say about my favorite animation house of those Saturday mornings of yore–but it would detract thematically from current posting here. But I will say, I’ve never checked out any comics material from my public library. Maybe I should give it a look–esp. anything that, reprint-wise, might coincide with those Saturday mornings of yore, including those DC Treasury Edition “Christmas with the Superheroes” I use to have.

    Thanks, Franco!
