DESPOP TUESDAYS!

Doing riffs on famous covers is nothing new in comics and it’s something we play around with at 13th Dimension all the time.
But here’s one by Des Taylor you just have to take an extra minute to really appreciate. First, here’s the original — 1965’s The Amazing Spider-Man #29, by Steve Ditko:

Now, Des’ version:

If they don’t so a scene like this in the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, they’re doing it wrong.
Des makes everything look like the animated series or movie you always wish would happen. His skill with this style is extraordinary.
Now, I am a big fan of covers that give you above-and-below views of the action, like this 1960 Journey Into Mystery #65 cover by Jack Kirby and Ditko:

But what Des does to set his apart is really play up the splashing-water effect that actually, dare I say, improves upon the original.
Now, I get that technologies are different today and it’s not necessarily apples to apples, but talent is talent. And that’s exactly what you need if you’re going to walk in the footsteps of giants.
