HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Superman #233 Facsimile Edition, DC. One of the big ones. The issue itself is significant because it’s when editor Julius Schwartz and writer Denny O’Neil took over in 1970 and attempted to make the Man of Steel more grounded. But its real significance is the Neal Adams cover — one of the best-known images of Superman ever. (Even if Adams claimed he hated it.) Also comes in a dandy Super Powers variant, plus foil, plus sketch. I’m all in.

Action Comics #1 Facsimile Edition, DC. Lotta Superman this week in advance of April 18’s Superman Day. (Check with your shop to see when exactly they’ll be putting this up for sale.) We’ve gotten an Action Comics #1 FE before, but this one’s in Golden Age dimensions, so yay! Also comes in foil and sketch versions, plus a Dan Mora variant that winks at David Corenswet.

All-Star Superman #1, Superman: For All Seasons Book One, Jimmy Olsen’s Supercyclopedia, DC. These “Special Editions” are Superman Day freebies, but there will also be sketch and virgin foil editions for sale for All-Star and a virgin foil for sale for For All Seasons. Supercyclopedia is a sampler of last week’s graphic novel. Again, check with your shop to see when they’ll be putting these out.

Batman: Dark Patterns #5, DC. The 12-issue series by Dan Watters and Hayden Sherman is holding up into its second arc.

Black Panther #1 Pan Dimensional 3D Edition, Marvel. Jack Kirby comin’ atcha, baby!

The Amazing Spider-Man #1, Marvel. Among the 1,000,006 variants: this Gil Kane “Hidden Gem” incentive cover and a fab Mark Chiarello Ditko-esque foil job.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

DC Finest: Batgirl — Nobody Dies Tonight, DC. I feel like people have kinda forgotten how good the original Cassandra Cain stories were.

Fire & Ice: When Hell Freezes Over #1, DC. Happy to see these two back in the spotlight.

Rom Epic Collection: The Original Marvel Years Vol. 1, Marvel. Available in softcover for the first time!

The Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection Vol 18.: Venom, Marvel. The first appearance and origin of Venom, plus the debut of Speedball!

  1. Over the last few years, I’ve (finally) noticed how many comics and TV/Movies do riffs on the Supes with the car image. “The Greatest American Hero” pilot and the 70s Hulk TV movie for starters.

  2. That Spidey cover reminds me more of 80s Frank Miller than Ditko.
