HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Scott Tipton, columnist, 13th Dimension

DC Versus Marvel Omnibus, DC/Marvel. Collecting pretty much every DC/Marvel crossover book, aside from the legendary JLA/Avengers, this is probably worth picking up just because I don’t know if we’ll ever see its release again.

Dan adds: There are two covers — Jim Lee and George Perez.

Ghost Rider Epic Collection Vol. 2. The Salvation Run, Marvel. Seventies Satanic motorcycle madness at its best!

Dan: Perfect for Halloween!

Batman/Superman World’s Finest: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1, DC. I can’t resist 1950s Superman-Batman teamups. A new printing!

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

The Penguin Special #1, DC. A one-shot including a new story of the Bird of Banditry, plus reprints — among them, the Penguin’s 1941 first appearance (which is great, if you haven’t read it). Naturally, I’m obliged to mention how much I’m enjoing The Penguin on Max. I mean, that’s why we’re getting this, isn’t it? You should also listen to the official podcast. There’s a lot of hagiography but it’s outweighed by the insightful and revealing commentary by cast and crew. And, hey, how about that Cristin Milioti?

Batman: The Long Halloween — The Last Halloween #2, DC. The Penguin (and The Batman before it) were both crafted from the world of The Long Halloween, so it feels fitting that this series is out now. I dug the first issue. This ish has art by Klaus Janson.

And there’s a Janson variant that stars the Penguin!

The Amazing Spider-Man #60, Marvel. Dig the Pat Gleason variant. A Spidey-vs.-Goblin, close-contact air battle will get me every time.

The Art of the Amazing Spider-Man, Dark Horse/Marvel. Speaking of, here’s the first release from the fledgling Marvel/Dark Horse collab, Bullpen Books. Not an Artist’s Edition per se, but it is filled with original Romita artwork — including seven complete stories — and published work, as well. There are also essays and other informative ephemera. It’s basically the same dimensions as a Bronze Age treasury edition. Perfect for the Spider-Man/Romita fan on your holiday list.

Wonder Woman Uncovered #1, DC. Another of DC’s one-shots collecting fairly recent covers. Wonder Woman’s had some fabulous ones, so this is definitely worth a look. I love this Drew Edward Johnson variant, based on the 1970s Wonder Woman retrospective.

America’s Greatest Comics Softee Vol. 1, PS Artbooks. Collecting the first two issues of the classic Fawcett title.

I wish they’d print a facsimile of the first Superman vs. Spider-Man. Even at a slightly higher price point to provide equal profits for each side I will take 4-5 copies!

  2. Excited for the DC vs Marvel Omni! I went with the Perez cover. I do wish that the DC Bullet had returned in time for this one!

    • Agreed on the bullet. But at least it’s the recent one and not the misfire of the “peel” logo. I also got the Perez cover.
