HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Catwoman: Trail of the Catwoman, DC. I like what DC is doing with these Compact Comics. They’re generally too small for these tired eyes to enjoy and I agree the art suffers from the truncated dimensions. That said, younger readers like books of this size and this is a terrific way to get some outstanding material into their hands. This book, mostly by Darwyn Cooke and Ed Brubaker, collects Catwoman: Selina’s Big Score, Catwoman #1-9, and backup stories from Detective Comics #759-762. For $9.99. That’s 10 bucks, folks. 10 bucks.

Batman and Scooby-Doo Mysteries #10, DC. I haven’t heard anything yet but I sure am hopeful the series will be back in January with a new #1, which has been the pattern. I thought the series was a bit off last year, but it’s kicked back into gear and I hope we get lots more.

DC All In Special #1, DC. I didn’t read Absolute Power. I’m not really paying attention to All In. I’m not into the new Absolute line of books. I’m not an old man yelling out clouds or anything, but I kinda spelled out my current philosophy toward new comics here. Nevertheless, I’ve become a sucker for foil covers — not for speculation’s sake but because they can look really cool, like shiny little pieces of art. So how can I pass up one that spotlights the return of the DC Bullet? I can’t!

Peanuts: The Second Classic Peanuts Collection, Titan. A new box set with three more reprints of classic ’50s-’60s Peanuts paperbacks. Putting it on the Chanukah list!

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #10, Marvel. Hey, go read Fred Van Lente’s latest COMIC BOOK DEATH MATCH: Secret Wars #10 vs. Crisis on Infinite Earths #10. Click here!

Archie Halloween Spectacular One-Shot, Archie. I dig these specials by the Official Comic Book of Halloween.

Back Issue #155 and Comic Book Creator #36, TwoMorrows. BI tackles spooky Bronze Age Comics, while CBC spotlights Tom Palmer. Can’t go wrong with either one!

Classic Star Trek Classic Phaser, Playmates. These have been released before but this is only $25 — another one for the Chanukah list!

Scott Tipton, columnist, 13th Dimension

Animal Man by Grant Morrison and Chaz Truog Compendium, DC. The full Grant Morrison Animal Man run, under one cover! This book should be in everyone’s house.

Justice Society of America #12, DC. I haven’t been keeping up with the often long-delayed JSA series, but looking at this cover, three things come to mind: I’m digging Power Girl’s new jacket, Alan Scott looks pretty good with a beard, and Solomon Grundy joining the team is a great idea.

Origins of Marvel Comics Deluxe Edition, Gallery 13/Simon & Schuster. I’m looking forward to seeing all the extra material that editor Chris Ryall has packed into this reprint of one of my favorite books of all time.

Dan adds: There’s also a kinda-sorta Facsimile Edition paperback available for about $22, but I’d go with the hardcover ($50) because our pal Chris puts things into historical perspective. (Nice Alex Ross cover, homaging John Romita.) The original edition has long been a sore spot for fans who reject Stan Lee’s byline hogging.

Star Trek Library Collection Vol. 3, IDW. Pick this up to enjoy, among other things, a spotlight on the Gorn from my brother David Tipton, David Messina and your humble narrator.

Dan adds: Scott writes good Trek.

Godzilla: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus HC, Marvel. I’ve been trying to put together a full run of Marvel Godzilla at conventions for years. Now I don’t have to.

Author: Dan Greenfield
