HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman #151 and Gotham City Sirens #1 Super Powers Variant Covers, DC. Scott’s out again this week, so I’m solo. Let’s get to it! These are the first of eight covers this month that pay homage to the 40th anniversary of Kenner’s Super Powers line, imagining figures that never were. Art’s by Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer, with Alex Saviuk handling the “Style Guide” imagery. Our hope? That McFarlane Toys will actually make these. Anyway, click here for more on the Shirtless Batman cover and here for the Poison Ivy cover.

Betty and Me #16, Facsimile Edition. The 1968 cover that launched a thousand memes. Archie Comics enters the Facsimile Edition game with a splash. (Betty is front and center for November’s Facsimile Edition, too. Click here.)

Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #8, DC. A tribute to Bill Finger! Sayeth the official description: “Gotham’s Finger Memorial Museum, home of giant appliances, giant games, and giant sports equipment, has been robbed…by giants!” So down for this.

Police Comics #1 Facsimile Edition, DC. When comics editors miscalculate: The editors at Quality obviously thought Firebrand was going to be the bigger star. Instead, it turned out to be that stretchy guy on the left, who also makes his first appearance here — as do Phantom Lady and the Human Bomb. Swell!

The Uncanny X-Men Facsimile Edition #266, Marvel. A new printing of this particular Facsimile Edition, featuring Gambit’s kinda-sorta debut. Longtime X-Fans know that Gambit actually appeared first in X-Men Annual #14, which came out slightly earlier. But since that story takes place after this one, X-Men #266 is considered by the X-Noscenti to be his first appearance. Got that?

Star Trek — The Illustrated Oral History: The Original Cast, Titan. A handsome collection of interviews culled from the official Star Trek magazine, along with some new features.

  1. Doesn’t it say something when most of the cool comic books coming out each week are either retro variants or facsimile issues? And it’s not just here in the 13th Dimension, I’ve heard from LCSs who say the same thing.

    • To be fair, 13th Dimension is primarily a retro site, so our choices reflect that. There are tons of great comics out there but most are not for this particular audience. And I’m glad for that. Anything that keeps comics alive and well is a good thing.

  2. I was fortunate to find a cheap copy of Betty and Me at a LCS a few years ago but I’ll still get the facsimile. I’ll also go for the Police Comics issue.
