HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Scott Tipton, columnist, 13th Dimension

Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers Vol. 2, Marvel. Happy to see this back in print, particularly as it includes the debut of “Cap’s Kooky Quartet,” which introduced the notion of the Avengers’ flexible roster, which I think is what made the series last as long as it has.

The Avengers #15, Marvel. I’m no archery expert, but it looks to me like Kate Bishop forgot her bowstring.

Black Widow by Kelly Thompson, Marvel. The entire Eisner-award winning series from Kelly Thompson and Elena Casagrande, complete in one collection! Cover by J. Scott Campbell.

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

JLA: Year One, DC. A new softcover edition of the series by Mark Waid, Brian Augustyn, Barry Kitson and Michael Bair. I’ve never read this. Kind of a surprise I know, especially when I’m such a fan of Waid’s modern riffs on Silver Age concepts and tropes.

Nightwing Vol. 3: The Battle for Bludhaven’s Heart, DC. The latest TPB collection of Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo’s definitive Nightwing run, which ends in September. (Sigh.) Highly recommended.

  1. Highly recommend JLA: Year One. Clearly set in the post-Crisis continuity with Black Canary as a retconned founder, but it’s still a great story. Waid fleshes out each member, but as always with his work, it all feels right. Kitson’s art is great as well.
