The Batman ’66 actor was feted for his animal rescue work…
The Greatest of All Robins is being saluted for his work beyond Gotham City.
Burt Ward, the Caped Crusader turned Canine Crusader, has been honored with a President’s Lifetime Achievement Award and a United Nations Association of the United States of America Humanitarian Award, recognizing his efforts in animal rescue.
He also received a President’s Volunteer Service Award, and his wife, Tracy, also garnered the UNA/USA award.
“It’s greatly appreciated because it is our life’s work,” Ward, the founder of Gentle Giants dog and cat food, told me. “We take no salary for our efforts. Our goal is to extend the lives of precious pets, but through the production of inspiring TV and film projects that we are working on, to improve the lives of mankind, as well.”
The Wards received the honors at a recent Royal Society of Saint George gala in Santa Monica, California.
“This is one of the highest honors of my career, being recognized by the president of the United States for doing something we love to do to help make a difference in the world,” Ward, who just this month turned 79, said.
The Wards have rescued more than 15,500 dogs during the last 30 years, Burt said.
Sandro Monetti, the deputy chair of the Royal Society’s California chapter, nodded to the actor’s days playing Batman’s sidekick: “The Boy Wonder has become a man of honor.”
