Gabba gabba hey, it’s MORRISON MONDAYS!
By BILL MORRISON
This week’s Morrison Mondays comes with a disclaimer. The piece I’m showing is based on an old comic book advertisement that includes a disgusting and hurtful racial stereotype, and a depiction of a “halfwit” that may be considered offensive as well. The ad is displayed here only for reference. But if you’d rather not expose yourself to the repugnant racism and insensitivity that was considered A-OK for kid’s comic books like Little Audrey and Terry-Toons 70-plus years ago, please just look at my piece and not the source material. Mine is full of wholesome, punky satire, and zero horrible bigotry!
In 2005, Rhino Records put out one of the coolest comic books ever produced, IMHO. It was called Weird Tales of the Ramones, and it featured a star-studded roster of talented cartoonists paying tribute to the iconic punk band, including (but not limited to) Rick Altergott, Sergio Aragonés, Mary Fleener, Xaime Hernandez, John Holmstrom, Carol Lay, Bobby London, John Pound, Scott Shaw!, Bill Stout, Steve Vance, Wayno, Jim Woodring… (Like I said, cool, right?) Oh, the comic also came with a 4-CD set of the best songs from the Ramones catalogue. Or did the CDs come with the comic? Either way, it was an amazingly satisfying package!
My contribution is this spoof of a classic comic book advertisement for cheap (and sometimes racist) rubber masks from around 1949. WARNING: In keeping with the original ad, some of the type is teeny-tiny, so get your cheaters out and don’t strain your eyes!
I’m still grateful to the insidious mastermind of this incredible package, Rhino art director Hugh Brown, for inviting me to hang out with the cool kids and pitch in on this fun project!

Eisner winner Bill Morrison has been working in comics and publishing since 1993 when he co-founded Bongo Entertainment with Matt Groening, Cindy Vance and Steve Vance. At Bongo, and later as Executive Editor of Mad Magazine, he parodied the comics images he loved as a kid every chance he got. Not much has changed.
Bill is on Instagram (@atomicbattery) and Facebook (Bill Morrison/Atomic Battery Studios), and regularly takes commissions and sells published art through 4C Comics.
