HAWKMAN #4: ZATANNA’s First Appearance Slated for FACSIMILE EDITION

EXCLUSIVE: Celebrating 60 years of DC’s most popular magician…

DC has three brepus Facsimile Editions headed your way in October and they’re all so ginchy they each deserve their own story.

You can click here and here for the others — you’ll definitely want to — but in this one, Zatanna makes her 1964 first appearance: Hawkman #4, by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson.

Dig the solicitation info, which will be released officially by DC later in July:

HAWKMAN #4 FACSIMILE EDITION

Written by GARDNER FOX
Art and cover by MURPHY ANDERSON
$3.99 US | 32 pages
ON SALE 10/23/2024

When two mysterious treasures suddenly appear on display at the Midway City Museum, the trail leads Hawkman and Hawkgirl to the lost city of Yin and to the hills of Ireland. But both trails end for our heroes with the unexpected discovery of “The Girl Who Split in Two!” Read the exciting first appearance of Zatanna in this full facsimile reprinting of the classic Silver Age tale.

A few thoughts:

— Hardcore fans know that this was actually the first part of a story that ran through several titles, as Zatanna searched for Zatara, her missing father. Other issues included The Atom #19, Green Lantern #42, Detective Comics #335 and #355, and Justice League of America #51. Wouldn’t it be neat if we got Facsimiles of all of them?

— Zatanna may be the selling point, but don’t forget that this is a Hawkman Facsimile Edition — the Winged Wonder’s first. He’s appeared in others but this is the only time it’s been his own mag (so far, anyway). There’s also a second Hawkman story: The Machine That Magnetized Men! by Fox and Anderson.

— We’ll be having our own Zatanna 60th anniversary celebration soon. This ish came out Aug. 20, 1964 — and our salute will come before then. Even with hindsight being 20/20, it’s kind of amazing she’s not on the cover, isn’t it?

— Give it up for Murphy Anderson and all that wing detail on the cover! One of the artist’s hallmarks.

Obligatory Price Comparison: An unslabbed, mid-grade original Hawkman #4 recently sold on eBay for $398.

  1. And if DC doesn’t follow through on the other issues as facsimiles, the whole story is reprinted in the trade paperback Zatanna’s Search.

  3. Ahhhh! I remember when DC reprinted the Zatanna serial in the 100 Page Giant comics back in the 70s. Good times! Great days! (Was I ever that young?)
