13 MIGHTY ILLUSTRATIONS: Kirby, Simonson, Perez, Ditko — MORE!
—
If you’ve never been, the Society of Illustrators in Manhattan is a marvelous place to see some of the greatest art in comics history, with an ever-rotating schedule of retrospectives.
Last year, for just one example, the Society’s gallery was given over to the art of Spider-Man, featuring original pages and covers by, especially, John Romita Sr., but also many others, like Steve Ditko, Gil Kane and Ross Andru. (Click here for 13 stunning pages from the exhibit. They are, ahem, amazing.)
This summer? It’s the The Art of the Avengers (and Other Heroes) and the creators represented are not only some of comics’ best — they’re the best of the best: Jack Kirby, Walter Simonson, George Perez, Steve Ditko, John Buscema, Barry Windsor-Smith and Romita among them.
The show kicks off at the Society on July 5 and runs through Oct. 20, so if you live close to New York — or are traveling through in the next few months or maybe even in town for New York Comic Con this fall — you have the chance to see some incredible work up close. (Click here for ticket info and hours. There’s also a reception open to the public July 12 at 7:30 p.m.)
But hey, guess what: We’ve got an EXCLUSIVE LOOK at 13 MIGHTY ILLUSTRATIONS for you. There’s gonna be so much more on display but this should give you a real taste of what’s on tap. (And if you can’t make it to New York, this at least gives you a glimpse at some outstanding art):
