EXCLUSIVE: DC Reveals the Next FIVE Characters Getting SUPER POWERS VARIANT COVERS

FIRST LOOK: Dick Grayson as Batman, Red Hood… and MORE!

DC has five — count ’em, five — more Super Powers action figure variant covers coming in the months ahead, each attached to a different Facsimile Edition.

We’ve already seen previews of Batgirl, Earth-Two Superman and Neal Adams’ Kryptonite Nevermore! Superman.

But first up, March 12 as we’ve reported, we get a John Constantine variant for The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 Facsimile Edition, marking his first appearance:

A big part of the fun of these is the back covers, which replicate the Kenner cardbacks of the 1980s. And since this is the first issue of this new wave, this back cover reveals the rest of the characters getting the Super Powers treatment.

Dig this EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK:

OK, so Manchester Black (hmm), Damian Wayne Robin, Dick Grayson as Batman, Harley Quinn and Red Hood.

Several thoughts:

— The Facsimile Edition issues are listed below each figure and you can click here to read more about those.

— Final order cutoff for The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 Facsimile Edition is Monday, Feb. 17.

— As usual, the figures — WHICH DO NOT ACTUALLY EXIST — are the terrific work of Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer. And, as always, the comics-style illustrations on the front are by Bronze Age stalwart Alex Saviuk, who worked on the original Kenner line.

— Ever since the first wave of the Super Powers covers were announced last year, we’ve been banging the drum to get McFarlane Toys — current manufacturers of the line — to produce these as actual action figures. I do think there’s a good chance we’ll see Damian, DickBats, Harley and Red Hood at some point. I have no inside info, but even without these covers, I’m sure they’re on McFarlane’s radar. (The thing is, McFarlane has only made one female SP character so far — Wonder Woman. But if they do more, I can’t see them ignoring Harley Quinn.)

— Manchester Black? That’s an interesting one. 2001’s Action Comics #775 — “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?” by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, Lee Bermejo, about 1,000,006 inkers and with a Tim Bradstreet cover — is widely considered a modern classic. That may be enough reason for the Facsimile Edition, but there’s been persistent speculation that Manchester Black — who debuted in this issue — and members of the Authority will be in James Gunn’s Superman. At least one Authority character has been confirmed but I leave you to draw your own inferences about Black and the rest.

— I’d pay good money for a Planet playset — and even more so, the Arrowcar!

— The full covers for the five issues and their release dates will be revealed in the months ahead. (None are expected to be in the upcoming May solicitations.) Keep coming back to 13th Dimension for updates.

  1. I don’t get the variant covers on facsimiles. To me, the point is to have an exact replica of the original book.

    • I have to agree with you on this one, Rob. No interest in any of these. I have zero emotional ties to them. I don’t mind the break for now. $$$.

  3. It didn’t even occur to me that the price tag sticker was the price of the comic book. Because back in the day, $4.99 was how much the Super Powers figures sold for.
