Dig This SNEAK PEEK at the BATMAN: YEAR ONE Artist’s Edition

A BIRTHDAY SALUTE: Art by David Mazzucchelli, words by Frank Miller — who turns 67…

Frank Miller was born 67 years ago, on Jan. 27, 1957 — and what perfect timing this is: Scott Dunbier, IDW’s master of all things Artist’s Edition, just this week on Facebook showed off a bunch of pages from the upcoming David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One Artist’s Edition.

The story, which some say is the greatest Batman adventure of all time, was written by Miller, natch, so how about a groovy birthday salute featuring all these glorious pages — including your FIRST LOOK at the cover in high resolution, which I found on the Penguin Random House website:

Dig this:

The pages include the classic fire-escape scene from Part 2, where Batman has trouble taking down a trio of low-level thugs, followed by the stunning sequence in Parts 2 and 3, where the young Dark Knight is cornered, outnumbered and trapped by a battalion of trigger-happy SWAT cops ready to gun him down at the first opportunity.

Batman not only escapes in especially dramatic — and, yes, dynamic — fashion, he saves a cat in the process!

Helluva guy, that Batman!

David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One Artist’s Edition is due in July 2024. The 144-page oversize hardcover lists for $150.

  2. Mazzucchelli’s illustrations are fantastic, and they look great in black and white.

Rereading these pages nearly 40 years later, it still bugs me that Batman’s blowdarts are tipped with “a slight dose of anaconda.” Anacondas are constrictors. They aren’t venomous.
