A bit of a birthday surprise…
Mike Zeck, who’s turning 75, is a comics artist known for tough guys — the Punisher, Deathstroke, Kraven the Hunter, Shang-Chi, you get the gist.
So what a delight to find muscular Mike’s cheerful-as-all-get-out illustration of the original Captain Marvel, probably the least grim-and-gritty hero of them all:
The undated piece sold via Heritage Auctions back in 2015.
Sez the official description: “Mike Zeck – Captain Marvel Illustration Original Art (undated). The Big Red Cheese at his Shazam! moment by Mike Zeck. Ink and watercolor and collage on board with an image area of 12″ x 17″. Excellent condition.”
Well, Sha-Zayum! Happy birthday, Mike.

Thank you for saying his real name

I second that. Nothing turns me off more than dissing the history of a character. Great illustration! Love Zeck’s pencils.

In retrospect, having Zeck illustrate another Golden Age Captain should have been a natural idea. I’m sorry we never got to see it—because that is one terrific and fun drawing.
