Dig These Magnificent ALEX ROSS Variant Covers for BATMAN AND ROBIN: YEAR ONE #1

Fitting work from a modern master…

Of all the cool Batman projects this fall, the one I’m far and away the most excited about is Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s 12-issue Batman and Robin: Year One, which kicks off Oct. 16. But you knew that; I’ve been writing about it all year.

Well, in fitting fashion, illustrator Alex Ross is making available no less than three variant covers as New York Comic Con exclusives — including a main version featuring never-before-seen art, based on 1940’s Batman #1:

The others are images we’ve seen before:

Cover B

Cover C

Cover A will run $40, but there’s also a signed version for $80 and a CGC version for $250. The breakdown for the other two covers is $50/$100/$250.

Can’t make it to NYCC? There will be a “very limited” preorder starting Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. ET. You can join the waitlist here.

By the way, it’s worth noting that Mikel Janin has a regular variant cover (as opposed to a retailer variant) that also homages 1941’s Batman #9. It will be in comics shops when Issue #1 comes out in two weeks:

  1. Those Alex Ross variant covers, plus that Mikel Janin one, really capture the essence of the Dynamic Duo.

  2. I love these pictures. There’s no doubt Ross is a true talent. But I think I’m done paying $40 just for a cover. Shoot a classic (facsimile) cover by Adams is only around $5. The scale just seems out there.
