Featuring Mikel Janin, Matteo Scalera and Karl Kerschl…
Of course the newly announced Batman and Robin: Year One by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee was going to have first-rate variant covers — and for Issue #1 the artists include Mikel Janin, Matteo Scalera, Karl Kerschl and Lee Weeks.
Weeks’ cover isn’t available yet, but here are the other three, along with Samnee’s main cover:
Cover price on the main-cover issue is $4.99. The others, with cardstock covers, list for $5.99. Two are incentive covers, however, which mean they will very likely command higher prices. Kerschl’s is 1:25 and Weeks’ is 1:50.
Batman and Robin: Year One #1 is due Oct. 16, 2024.

I’m not up on the latest publishing lingo. What is the difference between a normal cover and “card stock”? Just thicker? And what’s up with the ratios 1:25 and 1:50?
Those channeling the ‘66 show, I wish they had used the yellow oval. Other than that I think they jump out fairly well.

Regular covers have standard cover paper. Cardstock is a heavier grade, more like a slim trading card. For the ratios: Certain covers are incentive covers. For example, with 1:25, a retailer would have to order 25 regular editions to get one of that specific cover. Given their inherent scarcity, those usually sell for much higher than cover price. It’s a boon to dealers who are able to order that many. Hardcore collectors and completists like them because of their purported collectibility. Other people (and a lot of dealers) hate them.
