SUNDAY FUNNIES WITH KERRY CALLEN! By KERRY CALLEN Here’s a recent commission where I was asked to take the classic cover of Ghost Rider #6, from 1974, and change it to Goose Rider! (This was, coincidentally, before Ryan Gosling was cast as the flame-headed biker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.) The original cover was drawn by the-always-great John Romita: The person making the request asked me to draw in the style of Steve Mellor. Back in 1983, Mellor drew a Goose Rider story in Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1. (Whew! Long name.) He also drew the cover to Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1. I bought Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1 when it first hit the stands. I stuck very close to Mellor’s art from his GR story. I don’t know much about Steve Mellor. Aside from Marvel Tails, he also worked for Crazy magazine, which was also published by Marvel. He had a unique style, as seen by the page below. Sorry, I don’t know its source. You’ve let me down Mr. Internet. (If you know, please tell us in the comments!) He also worked on The Ren & Stimpy Show in the early ’90’s. One last thing you may have noticed too: As I drew Mellor’s Goose Rider, I couldn’t help but think of Smiley Bone from the Bone comic. By KERRY CALLEN At first glance, you probably think this Thing commission is pretty odd and not well drawn by me: But, it gets a little less odd when you realize the image comes from a comic panel originally from Fantastic Four #15, published in 1963. (Script by Stan Lee, art by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.) This printed panel had the small Thing image in black and white. However, the research I was provided was in color. It is no doubt from a reprint the patron had read. Regardless of the different versions, my finished art is probably more interesting in color. By the way, for privacy reasons, I typically don’t share the name of the person who requests work. But, with this one I’ll make an exception (with his permission, of course).
