Artist George Caltsoudas captures the Bat-joy and wonder — nearly 60 years later…

In the olden days, when we did a weekly round-up of the best variant covers of the week, artist George Caltsoudas was a frequent presence, with his inviting style of graphic design.
Now, he’s back with a magnificent print that pays homage to the 1966 Batman movie starring Adam West and Burt Ward that will celebrate its 60th anniversary this summer.
Behold, citizens of Gotham!

Holy pop art!
Caltsoudas’ piece, which was briefly (boo!) available through Brooklyn’s Bottleneck Gallery this week, wonderfully captures the colorful, go-go derring-do of the TV series’ theatrical release, with a heavy emphasis not just on the Dynamic but their four adversaries (five, if you count the shark). There are also classic sound effects, the Batcopter, the Batboat and, most dominating of all, the Penguin’s sub.
The print — appropriately titled “Batman ’66” — was a very limited edition and was available in four formats: an acrylic panel print ($85) and the less expensive KA-POW! edition ($45), as well as variants that boasted the sound effects in either silver or rainbow foil ($55 each):

Unfortunately, there are no plans for a second printing but Caltsoudas said there may be artist proofs to sell at a later time. Keep an eye on his website.
But all is not lost! The artist is already working on episode-specific prints like Surf’s Up! Joker’s Under!, Hizzoner the Penguin, and so forth. They will also be available through Bottleneck Gallery.
