BATMAN: HUSH and THE LONG HALLOWEEN to Get Facsimile Edition Releases

Two modern classics get the re-release treatment…

DC Comics in January is releasing SEVEN Facsimile Editions — a huge number. Not just that, there’s an eighth publication that, while not a Facsimile Edition, has similar appeal — especially for Batman fans.

Four of them are Silver and Bronze Age classics — including a treasury edition — and you can click here to read the details. The other is a special edition of 1980’s miniseries The Untold Legend of the Batman.

But DC is also hitting comics in the Modern Age — with Facsimile Editions of the first two issues of the epic 2002-03 Jeph Loeb-Jim Lee Hush storyline, and Loeb and Tim Sale’s 1996 The Long Halloween #1. (There’s also a “Noir” edition of The Last Halloween #1, which in September formally kicked off the new limited series.)

From writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale, Batman: The Long Holloween is a  harrowing saga from Batman’s early career, when Gotham City was undergoing a hideous transformation from a mere rat’s nest of gangsters into a deadly haunt

for costumed criminals.  It’s the story of three good men who made a pact to uphold justice; of a young hero tempted by the dark flirtations of a certain Feline Fatale;  of a mysterious serial murderer who kills according to the calendar; of trust betrayed…and of friendship doomed.  Featuring Catwoman, Harvey Dent/Two-Face, The Joker, Poison Ivy, The Riddler — any one of whom may prove to be the  mysterious killer known as “Holiday.”

In 1996, writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale teamed up for Batman: The Long Halloween, an award-winning 13-chapter saga that spawned multiple sequels and stands as the most influential Batman story of its era. Now, Loeb returns to the world of The Long Halloween for its long-anticipated final act: Batman: The Last Halloween, an all-new 10-part mystery continuing the story from 2021’s The Long Halloween Special. In each issue, Loeb will be joined by one of the top artists in comics, in a beautiful and lovingly crafted tribute to Sale’s art and legacy.

In issue one, Gotham City learns to fear Halloween once more as a terrible event threatens to destroy Jim Gordon’s life and puts Batman and Robin’s teamwork to the test more than ever before. In a city of liars, masked vigilantes, and criminals…can anyone be trusted?

A few thoughts:

It’s not clear whether there will be any more than these two Hush issues, but the full epic has recently been released as a DC Compact Comic, and it’s in the new DC GO! webcomics collection. It’s never been a Facsimile Edition; obviously DC wants to get this story into as many hands as possible. (UPDATED: Now we know why Hush is getting the FE treatment: DC at New York Comic Con on Saturday announced Hush 2 for 2025 by the same creative team, to run in the main Batman title. (Exact issues TBA.) Draw your own conclusions about whether we’ll get the full original in Facsimiles.)

Obligatory Price Comparison #1 (and #1A): An unslabbed, near-mint original Batman #608 recently sold on eBay for about $40. A Batman #609 in similar condition went for about $75. (That issue has the first actual appearance of Hush.)

Obligatory Price Comparison #2: An unslabbed, near-mint original Batman: The Long Halloween #1 garnered about $75.
