BATMAN AND ROBIN: YEAR ONE — DC Unveils Nifty Final Variant Cover

By Lee Weeks and Dave Stewart…

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s Batman: Year One #1 is almost here — hitting shops Oct. 16.

We’ve shown you black-and-white art, color art, the trade dress/logo, a peek at the Noir edition, and all the variant covers — save one, by Lee Weeks and colorist Dave Stewart.

That’s only because DC hadn’t unveiled it yet. Now they have. Dig this:

I gotta tell you, I love seeing modern artists draw Robin’s classic costume. It may be completely impractical but it’s a damn good design, and seeing today’s top illustrators do their superb spins on it only puts an exclamation point on that.

Anyway, I could be off base, but this feels like a reverse take on the classic Batman and Robin rooftop pose by Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson. Maybe it’s Robin’s outsretched arm, maybe it’s Batman looming above him, maybe it’s the two-pipe chimney. I dunno. What do you think?

In any event, Robin looks hella excited about something he just saw, does he not?

So that’s all of the Issue #1 covers. I’ve not seen any retailer exclusives, save for Alex Ross’ offerings, but do drop a line if you’re aware of something out there.
