BATDEVIL: The Great AMALGAM COMICS Character That Should Have Been

SUNDAY FUNNIES WITH KERRY CALLEN…

By KERRY CALLEN

In last week’s finale to my series that determined the Comic Battle of the 20th Century, I briefly mentioned Amalgam Comics. This is when, in the ’90s, DC and Marvel combined heroes from each universe for a series of stories. For example, Batman and Wolverine were mixed to create “Dark Claw.” (Amalgam Comics’ Spider-Boy #1 is coming soon as a Facsimile Edition.)

It was OK. But EVEN BEFORE Amalgam Comics, I wanted to see Matt Murdock become Batman. Matt is of course Daredevil at Marvel. He has a RADAR SENSE! How perfect is that for a bat character!

I took the liberty of reworking an old Batman commission (which I don’t believe I’ve ever shared online) and created BATDEVIL — finally releasing the decades-old burden I’ve carried.

I couldn’t decide if the art looked better with or without showing his radar sense.

  1. My personal Amalgam character I was hoping to see was to cover the mystical side of things. I didn’t like the twist in Dr. Strangefate, adding a third character to the mix.

Instead, I was hoping for Dr. Adam Strange, Supreme Sorcerer of the Pkanet Shi’Rann.

  2. Shouldn’t it be “Devil bat,” after the Lugosi movie?
