ARCHIE Finally Chooses Between BETTY and VERONICA in Special THE DECISION One-Shot

COMING IN AUGUST: I know who I’m rooting for…

Archie Comics may represent a certain timelessness but never let it be said that the editors there don’t shake it up or take chances. In fact, over the last decade or so, the only constant at Archie has been consistent, welcome change. There’s the new-style comics, the classic-style comics, the stories where the gang meet the Caped Crusaders from Batman ’66, or the Ramones, or the Monkees.

They’ve married Archie off, they’ve killed him off, they’ve introduced new characters to reflect our changing times.

Now, finally, the publisher is going for the big one — an August special issue called Archie: The Decision, a full-size, classic-style comic by Tom King and Dan Parent in which Riverdale’s most famous teen picks between Betty and Veronica.

Dig the solicitation, which will be formally released later this week:

Several thoughts:

Stephen Byrne variant

— First off, I’m #TeamBetty. Ronnie’s a lot of fun but Betty is the best character — the best human being — in Riverdale. She’s awesome.

— Hey, why does Archie get to decide? Really? He’s lucky these two young women will even give him the time of day! I hope whomever he chooses says to him, “Yeah, right. I’ve got better things to do than wait 80-some-odd years for you to wake up.”

— The covers suggest some kind of coin toss but Tom King always upends expectations.

— This is fun.

  2. I kind of don’t want him to choose. There, I said it.

    • Personally, I prefer my comic strip characters don’t advance in major ways. Especially something like The Peanuts, I never want Charlie Brown to turn 13 or to make contact with the football. But then I’m torn because without change we wouldn’t get the “Death of Gwen Stacy”. So I guess much like my dog, I’m just chasing my tail here.
