ARCHIE COMICS Doubles Down With Another Bawdy Facsimile Edition

EXCLUSIVE! First it was Betty, now it’s Veronica, courtesy of Dan DeCarlo…

Last month, we broke the news that Archie Comics was getting into the Facsimile Edition game in August with a full-on reprint of 1968’s Betty and Me — one of the company’s best-known double-entendre covers.

For September’s follow-up, it’s Veronica’s turn, with the publisher releasing a Facsimile Edition featuring one of its most ballyhooed racy Dan DeCarlo covers: 1993’s Veronica #28, which literally set Archie’s tongue wagging:

Here’s the official solicitation info, which will be released formally later this month:

A few thoughts:

— Archie Comics knows its market. Facsimile Editions play to an older audience and so starting out of the gate with two famously risque covers is certainly an attention getter. That said, the company is planning on broadening its offerings with first appearances, historic moments, and whatnot. But if you’re looking to start such a line with a splash, this is a way to do it.

— “I was at my comic shop recently looking through some Archie back issues we had for sale, and I couldn’t believe how expensive they were. This issue – Veronica #28 – was one of them; it’s one of those instantly recognizable Dan DeCarlo covers,” sez Mike Pellerito, Archie prez and editor-in-chief. “As Dan fans know, very few drew the Archie characters as perfectly as he did. It captures the vibe of ’90s Archie that collectors and fans can appreciate. As you can see from our early releases, we have some great surprises planned for fans of each decade of Archie as we continue to roll out the Facsimile line.”

— Hey, how about this: Mike’s comics shop is my comics shop — Aw Yeah Comics in Harrison, N.Y. They rock.

Obligatory Price Comparison: As Mike said, this ish commands a pretty penny. An unslabbed, mid-grade original copy of Veronica #28 recently sold on eBay for $225. There’s a robust market for Archie Comics bikini covers — especially by DeCarlo — and this one is among the most popular.

I hope they also pander to us “older” fans that want the facsimile copies for their 5 & 4 year old grandsons. Give us some of the fun of the classic eras from the earliest days without the double meaning. They’ll discover that stuff on their own in 8 years or so. I would love some Pureheart or Crusaders from the ‘60s to mid-70’s.
