Several thoughts:

Adventure Comics #431

— This is a really nice spread of eras and genres: Golden, Silver, Bronze, Modern, superhero, war, horror, and whatnot. Excellent variety.

— I still haven’t bought a DC Finest yet. I love the concept and really want it to succeed but with the advent of Facsimile Editions, it’s now actually weird to me to read vintage collections without the ads. That said, should I take the plunge, these are the ones that appeal to me the most: Hawkman, Green Lantern, The Spectre, Super Friends, War and Horror.

— Speaking of The Spectre: Michael Fleisher’s byline should be on the cover with Gardner Fox’s. His collaboration with Aparo is so well known — and their run gives this book its title.

Standard caveat: These have not been formally solicited by DC yet, so nothing’s official until it’s official.

  1. Hey Dan,

Thank you, thank you for including that spectacular Spectre splash page from Adventure Comics # 431 by the veritable compositional master of both Dutch angles and exquisitely (mid-70s) illustrative realism of the one and only Jim Aparo.

    A wonder for the eyes.

  2. Oh these look good! I may grab the Hawkman book—I’ve read very few of the original (60s that is!) stories!

  3. This is a good collection…really hope the quality continues. I’m hoping for mainly an All Star Squadron collection and maybe even a Firestorm or Infinity Inc collection…great to see those 2 ASS books in Spectre though.

  4. I’m only interested in picking up something like 1 in 5 of the DC Finest collections but I find this a truly exciting line.

  5. I think it is interesting that the Our Army At War stories are prior to the introduction of Sgt. Rock. I’m wondering of the same apples for the Haunted Tank in GI Combat, Gunner and Sarge in Our Fighting Forces, Mille Marie in Star Spangled War Stories and Johnny Cloud in All American Men of War?

  7. The biggest mistake DC made in collected editions was not printing their ads in their reprints. The ads were as much of the experience as the stories. Huge fail.

That said, I’ve picked up a couple of these and they’re pretty cool.
