13 SPIDEY COVERS: A STEVE DITKO Birthday Celebration

A tribute to his greatest character.

Steve Ditko was born Nov. 2, 1927. He’s 88 years old.

This year, we’re doing a double 13 COVERS salute. In this installment, we’re featuring Ditko’s work on Spider-Man. If I have to explain why, well, you’re probably here by accident.

The other tribute? 13 DC & CHARLTON COVERS, which you can find here.

As usual, I’m going to emphasize my standard caveat: This is a subjective list and not a ranking of any kind. This is pretty much what I dig and you may feel very differently. So, rather than beef about a cover you don’t see, instead join in the fun and share your own choices in the comments section or in whatever social-media thread you saw this.

Even beyond that caveat, I’ll add that some of Ditko’s most famous Spidey covers aren’t here. I’ve featured those before — as have many, many others. So some of these are among his more unsung works. But the first one has to pretty much always be on the list …

  1. Great covers! Great choices! One note: the published cover for ASM #10 is actually penciled by Kirby and inked by Ditko!

    • Thanks, Ken. I re-checked GCD, where I typically get my info and it says both Kirby and Ditko did the pencils, with Ayers and Ditko on inks.
