Actually, During Catman’s 6 year run (5 years with Kitten), they aged in real time, from 1940 to 1946. The two of them were quite popular, and only got canceled due to being with a small publishing company. Once Katie Conn (Kitten) became a teen of about 15, there were speculations, rumors, and gossip among comic fans concerning just exactly how “close” were Catman and Kitten really were. Their age difference was only 12 years, which wasn’t an issue in late 1941 when they were 23 and 11. It was, however, something to wonder about when they were 28 and 16, with Katie just as much in love with David Merrywether as she was the first day they met. Although David never overtly made a move toward Katie during the saga, he never did anything to quash her feelings either, never got involved with another woman, and the two are seen holding hands going to the movies in their very final appearance. He never did officially adopt Katie, so she kept her own name. No, I suspect the only way Katie Conn ever became Katie Merrywether was if she had a “Mrs.” prefix.
This relationship is probably why they were avoided for decades. Other comic companies didn’t want to go there.
However, this unique relationship is the one thing that made reading the whole Catman saga (available for free online) worthwhile.
After I read the series, I would say without doubt that there were definite feelings between the two, and the feelings seemed to grow stronger with each year. I hope the two of them waited until late 1946 before they became a romantic couple.
POSSIBLE TROPES: Precocious Crush (little girl with crush on grown man), Jailbait Wait (man waits for his girl to reach the age of consent), Wife-Husbandry (man raises a girl who grows up to become his lover), Raised by Wolves (Catman spent his childhood living with a Bengal tiger, which leads to the next trope), No Social Skills (Catman doesn’t have a lot of friends, didn’t have a girlfriend, and acts uptight a lot, probably uncomfortable being attracted to his ward).
