Walter Simonson was born Sept. 2, 1946. He’s 69.
I noted the other day that a lot of great artists were born this time of year. In the last couple of weeks we’ve been privileged to honor, for example, Marie Severin, Gene Colan and Robert Crumb.
And, of course, Jack Kirby.
We’re in the midst of a seven-day Kirby 13 COVERS celebration. Why do I mention that here? Because Kirby co-created Thor — and Simonson redefined him a generation later. They are 1 and 1A on the list of all-time greatest God of Thunder artists. They are Odin and, well, Thor.
(By the way, Simonson‘s wielding the hammer again with his alt-Thor epic Ragnarok from IDW. He talks about it here.)
So it’s time for Compare Your Thors! Below are 13 Thor Covers by Simonson. And click here for 13 Kirby Thor Covers.
(Here’s our usual caveat: These are subjective lists and not meant to be definitive. This is not a ranking of any kind. This is pretty much what I dig and you may feel very differently. So, rather than beef about a cover you don’t see, instead join in the fun and share your own choices in the comments section or in whatever social-media thread you saw this.)
Now … call down the lightning!
